Resolution of Optical Disc reading problem with Dell Computers

The frustrating situation arrives when optical drives stop reading the CD/DVD or even computer don’t detect these drives. Dell PC users often face this problem and need a perfect solution for it. Optical Drive is suddenly not reading the discs.

Resolution

The first and foremost step is to check the problem with multiple discs. Sometimes the optical drive doesn’t read some particular discs even if they are new in condition. If you still face this problem with multiple discs then continue with the following steps:

Method 1

1. Close all the disc burning software such as

a. WinDVD

b. PowerDVD

c. Roxio products

d. Nero Burning ROM

2. Close all the software accessing the optical discs automatically, for example

a. Windows Media Player

b. Winamp

c. VLC

3. Check now if still the problem exists then eject the discs out of the drive and keep it empty.

4. Restart the computer to close all the applications and their stuck access to the drive.

Check the Optical Drive is reading the discs or not. If you still face this problem then continues with below steps.

Method 2

Follow below steps to uninstall and reinstall the CD/DVD Drive,

1. In XP, go to the Control Panel and click the System to open System Properties. In Windows Vista & 7, open the System and Maintenance in Control Panel and then open System.

2. In XP, go to the Hardware Tab and click Device Manager. In Vista or 7, click on the ‘Device Manager’ in the left hand side pane in System Properties.

3. Browse the Optical Drive, right click on it and select Uninstall.

4. Restart the computer, if prompted.

5. The CD/DVD Drive will be automatically reinstalled on the restart.

Now, insert a disc inside the Optical Drive and check its status. Proceed with following steps if the problem still persists.

Method 3

You can perform following steps to update the drivers of Optical Drive and BIOS.

1. Visit the Dell Support Website.

2. Download the latest drivers for Optical Drive of your computer.

3. Install the latest drivers and restart the computer.

4. Download the latest firmware for BIOS.

5. Install the latest BIOS.

6. Restart the computer
