Find Budget Real Estate Near The Super-Rich Of Amalfi
No wonder that since it became a must-visit for Victorian aristos on the Grand Tour circuit, it has lured the world’ rich and famous. It has price tags to match too. A villa overlooking the coast here can cost US$4million. Yet travel not too far away from here an one can find all this beauty and more – at much less steeper prices. This is a barely-known secret that Italians have kept to themselves for far too long. Welcome to the Cilento coast. It is just over 50 miles south and stretches for almost 160km. It also borders the Cilento national park, Italy’s second largest and – along with Vallo Di Diano National Park – a Unesco World Heritage Site. Paestum aside, its picturesque seaside towns and villages – Acciaroli, Ascea, Castellabate, Cape Palinuro – may not trip off the tongue as readily but they offer the same mix of lovely coastal towns, glorious weather and breathtaking views over the sea but without the hefty prices of the Amalfi coast – which is still close enough to be visited on a day or weekend jaunt. Paestum – a town whose roots go back to some 2,700 years ago and boasts imposing and well-preserved Greek ruins – is also a World Heritage Site. Yet a 50sq m condo here may set you back just $100,000. In general, on the Cilento coast you should expect approximately $120,000 for a one-bedroom flat and $200,000 for two bedrooms – around a fifth of what you would pay on the Amalfi coast. Furthermore, some shopping around – allied to a bit of persistence – can unearth even greater savings. One example: in Ascea, one-bed sea-view flat was recently put up for sale for $100,000 and another a mere a stone’s throw from the beach at $85,000. A couple of the hotspots are at almost opposite ends of the Cilento Coast, namely Agropoli and, around 120km southwarsd, Scario. Prices will be slightly raised here, but again, shopping around can unearth a bargain. In Agropoli, a development of new flats around 10 minutes’ walk from the sea recently came on the market starting at around $145,000 for one bedroom. If you absolutely require a coastal view, budget around $160,000 for a one-bedroom and $170,000 for for two bedrooms. As ever, prices drop markedly if you are ready to consider a home that may be liveable but could do with some modernisation. However for property hunters drawn to the countryside but want to maintain a sea view, the hills above Casal Velino are a budget-friendly option, with a newly built single-bedroom unit available from just $90,000.
