The day has come and your son or daughter is finally turning 16. That means they are likely going to get their driver’s license and, hopefully, get a vehicle of their own. Getting your teen a car can be a lot of added responsibility – for both you and your child. Before you find the car of their dreams (or just the car that fits your budget!) and hand over the keys, check out these car buying tips from Royal Gate Automotive, a trusted St. Louis car dealer.

Do your research. When it’s your teenager behind the wheel, one of your first concerns is likely safety. Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ram all make vehicles with industry-leading safety features. But don’t just take our word for it—before buying any car, do your research on its safety features and ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for unbiased insight.

Make a list of priorities. Like any major financial decision you will make, it’s important to make a list of all the qualities and features you (and your teenager) want this future vehicle to have. Set a budget, know what kind of features are most important and know which ones you can do without. As awesome as a sunroof would be, it might not be at the top of the list of “must-have” features.

Think about the future. Is your teenager the active type who loves skiing, snowboarding and road trips? Then they should have a vehicle capable of getting them around town with all their gear. Will they be heading off to college soon and in need of a great fuel efficient vehicle for all the long drives home? Whatever the case, make sure the vehicle conforms to both their current lifestyle and wherever they may be in the next five years.

At Royal Gate Automotive, a reliable and helpful St. Louis car dealer, you can find the right first car for your new driver or for yourself. With a great selection of Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ram vehicles, you’re sure to find the right one!
