When looking for a place to book your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN that is far and away from the maddening crowds of tourists take a look at the town of Velez Malaga known locally as just Velez. Even though Velez is classified as a seaside resort situated between Rincon de la Victoria and Torre del Mar it remains unspoilt and undiscovered as of yet by tourists. Velez is easy to access as it is only 26 kilometres from Malaga and its international airport. This agricultural centre has a population of some 73,000 individuals and is the capitol of the Axarquia district.

Velez Malaga also sits on the scenic Route of Sun and Avocado which is 75 kilometres long. For the most part it runs along the unspoilt sea side area from Rincon de la Victoria and Torre del Mar. Due to its location the micro-climate which is sub-tropical enables the growth of products such as avocados and sugar cane. This route incorporated the villages of Rincon de la Victoria, Macharaviaya, Velez Malaga, Benamargosa, Benamocarra and Iznate as it traverses this area.

Having said all this we now know that the town of Velez sits in the wide valley of the River Velez. This is where most of the agriculture takes place because all the main resources are found here such as fertile land and water. The list of products grown here becomes endless but to name a few there are vines, olives, sugar cane and vegetable and salad crops. Besides the main crops there are a number of nurseries growing an array of plants, trees and seeds that are for sale. When you start to add in the different produces made here such as good quality olive oil and a range of wines the economic elevates even more.

Not only is Velez Malaga an agricultural community it is also home to a plethora of ancient buildings and artefacts as far back as the time of Phoenicians and the Carthaginians. Remains from these cultures have been unearthed by archaeologist proving their presences here. Some historians believe the ancient Greek city of Mainake once stood where Velez is today. From time immemorial Velez has been known as an important cultural and commercial centre while at the same time being strategically located. When the Moors occupied this area for eight centuries they renamed it Ballix-Malaca, or Fortress of Malaga, but previously the Romans called it Menoba.

For a day out from your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN in search of this area’s history you will not have to look too far. The 13th century Castle, which stands on top of a hill in the old part of town known as Arrabal de San Sebastian is a good place to start. This castle was built by the Moors and today a 16 metre tall tower still stands protecting the town as it did when it was first built. There is much more for you to explore on your journey through this historic area starting with the Palace of the Marquises of Beniel, the Hospital of San Marcos founded in 1487, four convents and monasteries, along with a church or two. All this will keep you busy for some time to come.
