Can diabetes make you tired?

Going to bed late night, being overworked and having multiple stressors can surely lead to lot of sleepiness and tiredness. However, if people are suffering from diabetes, there is a chronic feeling of tiredness and its nature is very intense.

Going to bed late night, being overworked and having multiple stressors can surely lead to lot of sleepiness and tiredness. However, if people are suffering from diabetes, there is a chronic feeling of tiredness and its nature is very intense. This is not only the feeling of weariness that will intensify. Sometimes, the mental capacity and energy are also compromised. The ability of making important decisions and thinking straight is also limited. Sometimes people feel very sleepy throughout the day. However, it is not realized by many people that this is mainly due to various blood sugar problems. Sometimes, the symptoms of fatigue can be covered up by a café latte or cappuccino. For treating tiredness in diabetes, the doctor should be very well aware of the causes of it. Given below are the common causes of tiredness in diabetics:

1. Insulin resistance

A major cause of type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance. The cells of the individual become very less responsive to the action of insulin. Insulin is a special hormone due to which the transport of energy is facilitated. This is mainly in the form of sugar in cells. This results into much decreased levels of usable energy. There is a high level of sugar in the bloodstream. However, if the sugar is not facilitated properly across the cell membranes, this form of energy will remain unused. This results into:

1. Feeling of weariness
2. Mental fatigue
3. Feeling of tiredness

2. Hypoglycemia

If medications or their regular insulin injections are taken properly by the diabetics, fatigue may be experienced due to a very low blood sugar level or hypoglycemia. The causes of hypoglycemia include:

1. Intake of alcoholic beverages
2. Excessive increase in physical activity
3. Decreased caloric intake.

If a person is feeling nervous,diabetes signs and symptoms, unusually sleepy, shaky or hungry, the best thing is checking the blood sugar levels and then correcting it. These symptoms should not be ignored.

3. Hypokalemia

If diabetes ketoacidosis, it is considered to be a very lethal complication of diabetes. Hypokalemia is developed and there is a decrease in the potassium level of the body. Hypokalemia can cause a lot of fatigue, weakness and tiredness. Thus, one should not take this condition very lightly. Proper care must be taken in this situation.
