Holiday Rentals in Spain for the Tower of Hercules in A Coruna
If you are up for a bit of Roman architecture when arranging your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN you need to investigate the Tower of Hercules which is actually a lighthouse that dates back to the Roman times. If you are in the city centre of A Coruna walk a short distance to the headland where a lighthouse stands with its oldest section dating back some 1900 years or the Roman times. It was during this era that Romans spread their forces across the European continent. The lighthouse stands some 57 metres tall with its face pointing out to the Atlantic Ocean, when you look at this excellent example of a lighthouse it appears to have been here since time immemorial. Just about any word you use to describe this monument will be inadequate due to its sheer size that dominates its position. The tower is free and open to the public and you can walk here from the city or there is a car park at the bottom of the tower on the sea facing side. If you would like to enter the tower, walk around its open turret or climb its stairs there is a small charge for this rare opportunity to explore a lighthouse built by the Romans. Once you get to the top the panoramic views will simply amaze you. This tower was built on myth and fact but the story that most people prefer to believe is that Hercules fought with and vanquished a giant called Geryon. When the battle had finished the giants head was buried a short distance from the headlands in an area that was to become A Coruna. This burial site was chosen by decree as a town must be built on top of the burial site, so the Roman city of Brigantia now the city of A Coruna came into existence. Besides the myths, the Tower of Hercules has existed in some form from the second century to today. An inscription on the base of the lighthouse indicated a Roman engineer by the name of Sevius Lupus was responsible for part of the lighthouse. There are some books that refer to the tower as early as 415 AD. Whatever the reason for its existence it is here and it is beautiful. Now that you have booked your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN take a closer look at this tower and decide for yourself. The question is did the Romans have the knowledge to build the stairs and access ramp inside the tower, even though It did burn wood inside the tower to warn the ships of approaching danger. It must have had the stairs outside because in 1788 when King Carlos IV ruled, a three year project was undertaken to ascertain if an enclosure around the existing facade was feasible and so it was. You can see this new facade as it appears today. This lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse in the entire world.
