If you are in the city centre of A Coruna walk a short distance to the headland where a lighthouse stands with its oldest section dating back some 1900 years or the Roman times. It was during this era that Romans spread their forces across the European continent. The lighthouse stands some 57 metres tall with its face pointing out to the Atlantic Ocean, when you look at this excellent example of a lighthouse it appears to have been here since time immemorial.

When the battle had finished the giants head was buried a short distance from the headlands in an area that was to become A Coruna. This burial site was chosen by decree as a town must be built on top of the burial site, so the Roman city of Brigantia now the city of A Coruna came into existence.

Besides the myths, the Tower of Hercules has existed in some form from the second century to today. An inscription on the base of the lighthouse indicated a Roman engineer by the name of Sevius Lupus was responsible for part of the lighthouse. There are some books that refer to the tower as early as 415 AD. Whatever the reason for its existence it is here and it is beautiful.

You can see this new facade as it appears today. This lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse in the entire world.
