There are five main characteristics in greeting cards that you will need to change and customize to create a really original looking work. If you want your custom greeting cards to look different from the commercialized versions that you see each day, you will want to work on these characteristics specifically. So read on learn exactly all the items that should be customized if you want original looking greeting cards of your own.

1. The size.

Since most people have a set idea of how large greeting cards actually are, one of the most easiest things to customize with them to appear more original is of course the size and dimensions of the card itself. Instead of going for the typical templates with standard greeting card sizes, you might want to make things a little bit larger, or even a lot more smaller. Believe me, once you set that uncommon size, people will notice and mark your greeting cards as something new and probably original.

2. The colors.

Another aspect of a greeting cards that you can change is the color scheme. By choosing a very specific color scheme that is not like any other kinds of greeting cards out there, your prints will already look very original and unique indeed. All you have to do really is to survey all the other greeting cards that your own prints will be pit against at and then use a color scheme that is far more distinct than all of them.

For example, if they all have very intense and bright colors, then your own greeting cards might benefit from being lighter, and more subdued. If they have tons of different hues, you might look more original with just one or two hues, or maybe even a gray scale color. As long as you keep on being distinct and unique with your colors, your prints will look very original already, just the way you like it.

3. The fonts.

Remember that greeting cards have text of course. These texts can also contribute to the original look of your greeting cards. All you have to do is to use more original font styles on them. Besides using the built in fonts in your desktop publishing application, it might be more creative of you to download some new and fresh fonts that only a few people have seen yet. Once you release those greeting cards, those fresh new fonts should project that original sense in your content, giving you of course that unique and very memorable look.

4. The materials.

When you choose the printing materials for your greeting cards, you also have a chance to make your prints look more original. This is because you actually have the option here of using some different styles paper materials and inks.

For example, you can use very smoothly styled paper with a glossy finish, or even metallic type inks that shine like gold or silver in the light. This has a lot of applications especially for greeting cards, and it will add that special unique feature in your greeting card designs that make them totally special and original.

5. The message.

Finally, of course, to be unique with greeting cards, you have to be unique with the message. Throw away the typical greeting mind you. Do not use “happy birthday” or “season’s greetings” at the title. Be more creative. Compose a joke, a poem or even a short and odd tagline. By NOT doing what people expect when it comes to a greeting card message, you should easily get original sounding greeting cards easily without customizing the designs too much actually.

Great! Now you can make your greeting cards look totally original. Review the items above and see what you can apply to your own custom cards.
