It's once again that time of year to book your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN and for a dramatic change, choose the illustrious city of Ronda. Reaching the top of the mountain is intimidating enough but when you get to the top, don't stand on the edge and look down: you might just fall off. Some people say that, at the end of the day, the journey is well worth the effort reaching it.

If you are up for a little potholing, close to the ancient city of Ronda are caves with paintings from the Palaeolithic period. The cave with these astonishing paints is known as Pileta's Cave. The city of Ronda itself dates as far back as the Neolithic age making it one of Spain's oldest cities. After the prehistoric people settled here the next civilization to leave proof of their existence behind was the Moors. The ancient fortified walls surrounding the city are a good place to view the area from and while you are here take a look at the famous Arab Baths down in the gorge.

The Casa del Rey Moro was never the home of the Moorish King as it wasn't built until the 18th century when the Moors were a distance memory. The gardens surrounding this Casa are even newer being designed in 1912 by the French gardener Jean Claude Forestier. There is one thing found here that is not a fraud and that is the Water Mine. Sometime in the 14th century the Moorish King ordered the cutting of steps into the stone walls which allowed people to obtain water from the river far below in the gorge. As we know when one army attacks a fortified position the first thing they do is cut off their water supply. This access to the river was done to prevent this.

The centre of activity in Ronda is the New Bridge which connects the old city known as the La Ciudad which contains the newer parts of Ronda and its residential section of the city. The bridge took some 42 years to reach completion dating from 1751. The bridge connects the city as it dramatically crosses the El Tajo Canyon.

The Plaza de Toros, as the name indicates, is the oldest bullring in Spain. There are two outstanding statues just outside the entrance to the plaza of Ronda's famous bullfighters, Cayeano Ordonez and Antonio Ordonez. In 1785 the grand opening of this famous plaza was celebrated by two of the most famous bullfighters at the time, Pedro Romero and Pepe Hillo. When you enter the plaza today you can still see the balconies where ladies threw flowers and scarves to the victorious matadors down below. You can visit the paddocks where the bulls were held before being released into the square. To get an idea of bullfighting in Ronda and its history, visit the museum located in the plaza.

Once you're settled into the HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN, take a stroll through town to get your bearings. As you walk along you will feel as though each step you take is a step back in time. The narrow streets with their old buildings lining the pathways were once filled with knights of old and ladies in need, but today these same buildings are tapas bars, restaurants and chic boutiques. To get a feel of the area’s history visit the museums including the Museo del Bandelero. You will never get tired of walking these ancient streets with so much to see. As you walk along you will pass old churches on narrow streets leading to the city squares. You can sit at one of the cafes on the plaza and watch the world pass by as many people have done for centuries. Could it get any better?
