What is going on this year with the Chiefs? For their first pick in the 2011 NFL draft, and 26th overall, the team selected Jonathan Baldwin, Wide Receiver from Pitt, who was predicted to go in the second or third round. Missouri Tigers: The nickname "Tigers," given to Mizzou's athletic teams, traces its origin to the Civil War period. At that time, plundering guerilla bands habitually raided small towns, and Columbia people constantly feared an attack. Such organizations as temporary "home guards" and vigilance companies banded together to fight off any possible forays.

The town's preparedness discouraged any guerilla activity and the protecting organization began to disband in 1854. However, it was rumored that a guerilla band, led by the notorious Bill Anderson, intended to sack the town. Quickly organized was an armed guard of Columbia citizens, who built a blockhouse and fortified the old courthouse in the center of town. This company was called "The Missouri Tigers."

The marauders never came. The reputation of the intrepid "Tigers" presumably traveled abroad, and Anderson's gang detoured around Columbia.

Soon after Missouri's first football team was organized in 1890, the athletic committee adopted the nickname "Tiger" in official recognition of those Civil War defenders.

Kansas City Royals: In contrast to 2010, the Royals began the 2011 season with a hot start, tying for the best record in the American League with a 10–4 record after fourteen games. The quick start followed a successfulspring training season for the Royals. Success faded as the season progressed, however. The Royals last had a .500 record at 22-22, and then lost five games in a row. By the All-Star break, the Royals had a record of 37-54, the worst in the American League. On a more positive note, the season also saw the emergence of rookies such as Eric Hosmer and Aaron Crow, the team's representative in the 2011 All-Star game.

A new 11 acre Sporting Kansas City (formerly KC Wizards) stadium project was built specifically for soccer. It will include an 18 field complex for amateur soccer.  The stadium will seat 18, 500 which will be available for other sports and events including football, lacrosse and rugby as well as concerts. The playing surface will be natural grass with a SubAir under-soil heating and cooling system. A dramatic canopy will cover every seating section. The pitch is 75 yards wide by 120 yards long. It will be the FIRST MLS stadium fully lighted for HDTV and will have 300 HDTV’s and two high-definition scoreboards and hi-def video boards that circle the field. It has over 150 WIFI access points and an on-site cellular network.
