Monuments of Madrid for Spanish Holiday Rentals

If there's something that Madrid has an abundance of besides museums, it is monuments. And without any beaches nearby to spend the day sunbathing, you need something other than the sea views to interest you when on a SPAIN HOLIDAY RENTALS in the city. The richness of the Spanish empire had to be passed somehow and the monuments of Madrid are still a testament to the inflow of funds during richer times.

Built in 1738 on the former site of the castle, which was destroyed in an accidental fire, is the Royal Palace which commands stunning views south of Madrid and of the river Manzanares. It is now used a few times a year by the Spanish royal family; when not in their use, some rooms are opened to tourists and guided tours are available. Centrally located building near the Plaza de Espana, making it a 5-minute walk from most of the central Madrid hotels and lodgings.

Conveniently opposite the royal palace, another more recent newcomer to Madrid is the cathedral, which was only officially opened by Pope John Paul II as recently in 1993. At the front of the cathedral, one can see parts of Madrid's city walls dating back to the 9th century AD. The courtyard provides excellent contrast between modern and ancient arches and monuments. Commemorating Madrid in the middle of a roundabout is one of five former entrances to the city. It is often decorated for concerts, rallies, sporting events and during the Eurovision Song Contest.

At the base of a monument, you can see the main road, Ciebeles Sol, Banco de Espana and the Metropolis building. Turn around and the sanctuary of Retiro park is in front of you: an oasis of a 350-plus acre park where you can escape from the chaotic traffic of Madrid. In the summer, there are a few places in the shade where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll escaping the worst of the heat. Inside the park itself there in a number of statues and monuments to Madrid plus a book stall in the market, as well as numerous concerts throughout the year. In addition, there is an exhibition hall and a lake for boating. The only problem might be finding your way around.

Located just opposite the main post office is the largest roundabout in Castellana and at its centre is a fountain of Neptune and his richly decorated chariots. The size of this monument is impressive. It is often the starting or ending point for many sporting events in Madrid when it is converted for open-air festivities should over 20 000 people wish to see a local or national team celebrate a trophy. Some will think it strange that the post office can be seen as an office of a monument in Madrid; however, is exactly that. Dominating one side of the Plaza Ciebeles is the four-storey tower from the early 20th century.

If you want to send a postcard while on your SPAIN HOLIDAY RENTALS, find the special counter in the post office where they can mark post with a special memorial postmark. Remember to take a walk inside the building to find it.
