The TEOF (Toronto Educational Opportunity Fund) Golf Tournament held July 14th was a success, raising a total of $24,000 dollars to go towards supporting the TEOF Food For Thought Nutrition Program, a charitable organization supporting child nutrition and the Kindergarten parenting programs of Inner City schools.

This is the 6th annual tournament to take place. Director of TEOF and President of the Elementary Teachers of Toronto, Martin Long discussed the importance behind the event.

“Unfortunately in our society we have children at a disadvantage to the extent that they’re not receiving adequate nutrition,” said Long. “We know as teachers that you can’t learn if you’re hungry so we have to address the hunger issue. We have to feed the children because, unfortunately, child poverty exists in our community.”

Event participants enjoyed a game of golf as well as dinner, raffles and an auction at the event’s conclusion. CUPE 4400 Unit C Steward Coordinator, Colleen Costa, thanked the event’s supporters.

“Thank you again to all our sponsors and supporters,” said Costa. “We’re raising awareness and trying to get as many people involved as possible in regard to nutrition. We need the support and we need to raise the awareness that this is about hunger but it is also about nutrition, about obesity, about physical education, about how to prepare food (life skills) for children.”

Sponsors at this year’s event included CUPE Local One, CUPE Ontario Division, Elementary Teachers of Ontario, Financial Educators INC, Harbourfront Center, Intercontinental Hotels, The Toronto Marlies, Canadian Union Promotions, CUPE Local 4400 and more! First Woman Hockey Hall-of-Famer, Angela James also attended the event.

TEOF additionally supports parenting and literacy programs. Originally with the former Toronto Board of Education and, later, the amalgamated Toronto District School Board, TEOF has been encouraging nutrition programs for the past 30 years. Upcoming annual TEOF events include the “Don’t Forget to Feed the Kids” Auction in November and the annual Lunar New Year Banquet in February.
