Manufacturing Processes of Sunglasses

Sunglasses are eyewears which are basically designed to protect the eyes from harmful sun rays, extreme glare, dust particles and overexposure to radiation. Bright light can damage eyes to a large extent. Moreover, it can lead to soreness, headaches or damage to lens, retina and cornea like delicate parts.

Sunglasses comprise of a frame and lenses for light filtering purpose. Lenses are made up of some colorized plastic like polycarbonate. However, glass is mainly used in lenses. Frames are made up of some good quality plastic or metal. Metal frame has advantage that it is not fragile. The manufacturing process of sunglasses can be divided into three steps. First is the manufacturing of lenses, second is manufacturing frames and third is joining together the two things.

Lenses Manufacturing

• The manufacturing of lenses starts with the addition of colorant to lenses. It can be done in two ways. One is adding color to molten lens material at very high temperature. Second is, post coating the color which is done chemically. This process is adopted to add color to finished lenses in order to get the desired tint.
• Once blending the proper additives is over, next step is casting the molten glass or plastic into some lens shape. This further divided into two parts. One part refers to the inexpensive lens in which lens are simple pucks. While expensive lens are made in the way as prescription lenses are manufactured. An instrument, lensometer is used to find the optical centre of the void area.
• Next is to give proper shape to the lens. For this purpose curve generator is used exclusively. The level of curve depends on one’s choice. The edge grinder is used to give it a proper shape in order to fit it in frame.
• Then some anti reflective substance is used to coat the lens. For this, vacuum coating method is mainly used. This is done to mitigate the internal reflection

Frames Manufacturing

• The finished lenses are then mounted into the suitable frames. Screw mount design or tension mount is basically used to fix lens in the frame. Tension mounting is widely done in plastic frame. The plastic frame is quite stretchable and hence lens can be easily fitted into the grooves.
• For metal frames, screw mount design is used. Metal frames have the higher probability of deformation. There are two open ends which are flexible. Lens in mounted with the help of these two ends.
