Salamanca is a place for all the people no matter what they are searching for while staying in their RENTALS IN SPAIN. Salamanca is home to the third oldest European university founded in 1218. This centre for learning is one of Spain's most beautiful cities when related to its charm and historical heritage. Due to all of this Salamanca is now a major tourist destination which is the basis for its economy. Salamanca probably has the purest form of Spanish or Castellano that is spoken anywhere enticing students to this area to learn the language. UNESCO declared Salamanca a World Heritage City along with being chosen as the European City of Culture in 2002; this honour was shared with the Belgium city of Bruges.

If you have the opportunity, venture over to Guijuelo which is situated in Southern Salamanca. This village is famous for its Spanish delicatessens with an array of local produce including pork meat and cured hams on offer.

Interested in the history of Salamanca? Well its original mane was “Helmantika” which was given to it by the Celts that settled here in the fourth century BC. The Romans renamed it Salamantica and sometime in the 13th century the name was changed to Salamanca as it is known today. The city is linked north to south by the Roman road called Ruta de la Plata which was used for herding animals hence the name.

The culture of Salamanca was highly influenced by the Muslims there by overpowering the Christians when they invaded the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century. Later the Christians re-conquered the peninsula in the 13th century. The area was being improved even more when King Alfonso IX initiated the University of Salamanca in 1255 and was ratified by Pope Alexander.

The university was to produce many important people such as Miguel de Unamuno, a famous published author that was to become Vice Chancellor. All this highly improved the city and university's standing in the country. During the Spanish War of Independence in 1812 Salamanca was the place where the French were defeated at the Battle of Arapiles.

Salamanca became a flourishing cosmopolitan city that included a growing culture and heritage base when democracy was achieved along with the presence of Spanish monarchy. The size of Salamanca will deceive you as it has all the leisure facilities available normally found in larger cities. Salamanca is a serene place to walk through as you discover all the charms this ancient city has to offer. The night time is also well catered for with a number of nightclubs, discos and bars where you can dance the night away.

There are a number of architectural masterpieces in the city constructed with a special stone that gives off a golden glow just at sun set. Included in this group of buildings that need to be viewed at the evening time are the cathedral, the Museum Casa Lys and the Art Nouveau.

When choosing Salamanca for your RENTALS IN SPAIN, don't worry about there not being any beaches of coast around. Salamanca is full of activities including gyms, sports centres and swimming pools and more: plenty enough to keep you busy during your holiday.
