The Basic Steps for DIY Custom Catalogs
Nonetheless, they are commissioned to do the layout and design because they are already handy with different desktop publishing programs. From them, the soft copy of the catalog goes to printing. This is the reason why the catalog printing from most big companies are professionally done because they pay professional designers to do a good job. But if you are just an organizer for a small event, like a bake sale, a community auction, or a garage sale where you have several items to highlight but could not afford to hire a designer, does that mean you cannot have a catalog? By all means the answer is NO. You can actually make your own if you just have a small event where you need catalogs but do not need to make those glossy magazine types. You can actually just use Adobe Photoshop and print a few copies on your own. Or you may want to save it in PDF file format that your members or neighbors can view online before going to your event. Here are some of the things that you should do. 1. Write down your ideas for a catalog. Determine the size of your catalog, the number of pages and the products that will be included in it. You may also want to list down those that you want to highlight. 2. Your catalog will need product photos. You can do a product shoot in your own living room using a digital camera and upload the files in your computer. 3. Key in the text portion of your catalog using a word processor. Create short descriptions and product codes for easy reference. And don’t forget the prices. Make sure that these are free of errors by proofreading them before printing. 4. When you use Photoshop, set your file size as to how big you want your catalog to be. Save your file using the page number so that you can easily refer to the items by page. You will have to make individual files for each page. 5. Make sure that your layouts are done in 300dpi resolution so that your pages are of high quality. That is the least you can do to make your catalog look nice. 6. If you do not have a colored laser printer, an inkjet printer will do just fine. You may have to use book paper though. 7. If you want to make a booklet, then make provisions for the staple or binding. For example, if you want to produce a 6” x 9”-catalog, your layout should be 12” x 9” so that it can be folded. Making your own catalogs is not as bad as you think. If you know how to use Photoshop, you can surely handle your own catalog printing without much help. So the next time you have a small selling event, make use of this program to make your own marketing materials. You will be surprised at how these can help move your products. Who knows, you might even get a pat on the back for the effort you put into printing those materials. Disclaimer: Article submitters are solely responsible for the content of their articles.
