Costa Blanca Holidays: Some Places and Towns to Visit
For your COSTA BLANCA HOLIDAYS there are some lovely towns and villages to visit. Guardamar del Segura for one: located at the mouth of the River Segura, Guardamar del Segura is one of the most popular coastal resorts. Its sandy beaches and excellent climate are the main attractions and is popular with Spanish and European travellers. Guardamar castle and old town was destroyed by an earthquake in 1829 and the town was rebuilt closer to the sea, but sand dunes constantly moving intervene on Guardamar del Segura. A tree planting project began at the end of the 19th century to anchor the sand and save the city. This beautiful tree-lined area is now two beautiful shady parks. The capital of the Vega Baja region of Alicante, Orihuela is an ancient city with a long and distinguished history. Although there are settlements in the region during the Bronze Age, Orihuela came to prominence during the Roman occupation when it was known as Auraiola. It was an important place for the Moors when Teodomiro was reconquered by Christians in 1296. Known for its many beautiful churches, palaces and monasteries, Orihuela also has several museums worth visiting while in the city. Every year thousands of tourists from Spain and even across Europe head for the city of Torrevieja. Its wide range of facilities, excellent sandy beaches and lively atmosphere all help make it a popular choice. Previously a small fishing village, Torrevieja became one of the leading exporters of salt in the world with two large salt lakes situated behind the town. An explosion in property development in the 1980s and 1990s caused the city to grow at a phenomenal rate. The history of Ciudad Quesada is completely different and unique than any other city or town in the Costa Blanca or even the whole of Spain. This is a story of ancient settlers, not bitter wars between Arabs and Christians. Ciudad Quesada has a church and a medieval fortress in the old parish built over one hundred years. Ciudad Quesada is the result of childhood dream of a man, a dream of building their own "vacation in the city" where people could live together in harmony, peace, and enjoy life. This dream of Justo Quesada Samper finally became a reality in 1972 when the city of Ciudad Quesada was started and completed in 1999 when it boasted its own Town Hall and its own mayor. Originally a Moorish village, Formentera del Segura was conquered by the Christian king Jaime I in 1242. The town changed hands several times over the centuries prevalent until 1730 when it came under the supervision of Nicolas Pérez de Sarria (the Lord of Formentera) who gave the village the current name. Largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1829, Formentera del Segura was rebuilt in 1840 culminating in the construction of the parish church. Based mainly on agriculture and the cultivation of citrus fruits to its survival advantage, the Formentera del Segura irrigation system was created by the Moors centuries ago. One of the most popular festivals is the "Bicycle Day" with the cycling race featuring many of its inhabitants. A village on the banks of the River Segura, Rojales was able to maintain its traditional Spanish atmosphere even with the invasion of tourism and real estate development. With a history dating back to the occupied Arab Rojales has further evidence of irrigation systems in place during the period of Arab occupation. Also worth a visit in Rojales are the water wheel Azud, the Charles Bridge and Gasparo Wells III. There are also the cave houses at El Rodeo where the market is held regularly. Almoradi is a city of about 13,000 inhabitants and remains one of the traditional sites of the Vega Baja region. Almoradi is a substantial seat of the court of the water which exists to resolve disputes over irrigation, an important sector of agriculture. The Court is an ancient and historic institution fining in Vellonen Real: old Spanish coins. While in Almoradi it is well worth a visit to the casino, the church of San Andrés Cortés, and the theatre where traditional Spanish plays can be seen for another unusual tourist attraction while on your COSTA BLANCA HOLIDAYS.
