Various communities follow different ways to find one right companion. Jewish community arranges Shidduch. This is a formal way of arranging marriage of prospective partners by their families and religious heads. This has been a trend in more strict orthodox circles of this community. Two prospective people are introduced to one another by these people for the purpose of marriage only. For this they make inquiries of various things related to the prospective matches. Most of the matches are considered from within close circles where the background and character of the other person can be easily traced. Yesteryears’ China, unlike today, had mostly an elderly woman playing the matchmaker, because in feudal system the females hardly got to get out of their houses and mingle with others in society. These ladies had widespread knowledge of available bachelors and bachelorettes. They would inform the families and if suitable the families would then take things further.
Looking back at the history of Dating in western countries, families were actively involved into this process. They would sit across table and discuss every aspect of the prospective match in depth with kith and kin. Even the clergymen would be involved many times. In comparison to the above mentioned communities, western communities had a broader outlook towards this dating and matchmaking process. The people had clear vision about their partner and had the freedom to find him/ her on their own, though families did intervene when required. But the basic function of finding true match and express love to him/ her was performed by the young guns themselves. Today things have changed all across the globe due to globalization. People, certainly the parents, have adopted more flexible approach towards accepting the partner of their child. Thus, institution of marriage has become more individualistic and personalized rather than formal and obedient.
