Sherman Schuett Advises Soy Protein Over Milk Protein for Lowering Bad Cholesterol.
This study is published in the latest issue of "Journal of Clinical Lipidology." Researchers have been studying soy protein's ability to lower cholesterol for a long while now. One item that's remaining elusive is how the protein lowers cholesterol levels. The new study shows that soy protein lowers total and LDL cholesterol significantly more than milk protein in patients with moderately high cholesterol levels. And it does so without lowering HDL cholesterol, which is the good kind. High levels of LDL cholesterol are a famous risk factor for heart disease and the risk of death overall. That is what makes this new study on soy protein so important -- and promising. This study compared soy to milk proteins (which had a high calcium content) on blood fat levels while the patient was not eating. It showed that soy lowered cholesterol in such a way that does not involve an increased excretion of bile acid into the body, which is what researchers have surmised in the past. Still, though the exact cause isn't known, the results speak for themselves. In 1999, the Food and Drug Administration said that "25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease." As it stands, 11 other countries have approved health claims for soy protein's potential to lower blood cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease. What is very interesting here is that the soy protein used in the study has fewer "isoflavones" than most commercially available soy products. Isoflavones are most often linked with any health benefits from soy. But this study says something else is afoot; there is something else about soy that is leading to the cardiovascular benefit. Those in the study taking milk protein also had some lowered cholesterol, but to a far more modest level. If you have serious cholesterol concerns, it will do no harm to work more soy into your weekly diet.
