Baseball and NFL Jerseys: A Brief Glance into the History
The history of baseball uniform can be traced back to 1849 when New York Knickerbockers Baseball Club first wore it. They sported blue woolen pants, flannel white shirts and straw hats. Soon, by the end of 1900, the trend of wearing baseball uniforms was adopted by all teams of Major League Football. Till then, the stockings which were worn till knee was used as major differentiator of the teams. The striped uniforms saw the dawn of the day in the late 1880’s when Detroit Wolverines and Washington Nationals were seen sporting striped jerseys. Similarly, NFL Jerseys made entry and witnessed the evolution only after 1950. From 1920 to 1950, the uniforms of football teams were plainly colored and made of wool. The color scheme was also basic. It is also a common observation that for the sake of merchandising and boost the marketing efforts of the team along with to relive the passion of the team, throwback jerseys are also famous with baseball and football teams. The baseball jerseys throwback can be seen in college games also. Wearing a throwback jersey can be seen as a tribute to the old style of gaming also. The Tiedman & Company Sportswear, Mitchell & Ness, Ebbets Field Flannels were first to produce throwback jerseys for baseball sports. Likewise, NFL also incorporated old uniforms and throwback NFL jerseys during the 75th anniversary in1994. The throwback jerseys are the considered as major tool for merchandise department of the team. It increases the popularity of the team and brings the revenue home.
