This is a bit different from the term ‘portable furniture’ in which the furniture can be assembled or disassembled but each of the separate unit can not be used independently. However, portability can be a feature of the modular office or residential furniture. The modular office furniture can therefore come in separate attachable units which can be adjoined or disjoined at will. The concept of modular furniture gained prominence when it became essential to have smart work places. These workplaces required the optimal utilization of space, ease of working for long hours and also to accommodate all the instruments and devices required in a specific department or area. The office furniture, in order to take care of all these factors, needs to be designed in such a way that it meets all these requirements and, at the same time, is also capable of meeting the requirements of the future. Some of the chief characteristic of the modular furniture are the following:
1. Easy to use and maintain: The furniture is easy to use since it can be set up, moved and even cleaned easily. The sliding office kitchen cabinets with railings, being modular, can easily cleaned along with being used for keeping a good number of utensils.
2. Ergonomic design which suits your body. This enables you to work for long hours with less tiredness or body aches.
3. Special provision for keeping different things depending on use: The modern reception table will be having the right height and the space for all the items which you might be requiring at the reception. These could be separate modules for keeping the telephone systems, fax machines and for other requirements.
4. Standardization as well as customization: For some specific requirements, there can be standardized modules for use. So, when there is a need to add more shelf space, you might need to buy a standardized module which can be fixed to the existing one to create more useable space. Similarly, the modular office furniture can also be customized as per your special requirements and designed accordingly to fit into the space and be easy to use.
5. Portability or ease of carriage: Since this comes in separate modules, it can be packed and transported easily. Also, it occupies less space of the truck.
6. Aesthetic appeal: There are different ways in which you can make the office furniture more aesthetically appealing. This can be done by using the plywood, boards, laminate and in many other ways.
7. More practical option: If it were not for the modular furniture, you might be required to buy the new furniture for meeting the growing office needs of the office which may not be feasible. Adding a module to an already existing furniture could be a more cost-effective alternative.
