Movie Review: Due Date

To be perfectly honest, the basic premise of Due Date is completely absurd. Peter (Downey Jr.) is a traveling businessman who somehow lands on the “no-fly list” after an inadvertent incident with the air marshal on his flight.

To be perfectly honest, the basic premise of Due Date is completely absurd. Peter (Downey Jr.) is a traveling businessman who somehow lands on the “no-fly list” after an inadvertent incident with the air marshal on his flight. Also involved is Ethan (Galifianakis), who is banned from flying as well. Peter is in a real pickle, as his ID has disappeared, meaning he can’t even rent a car to get home; his wife just happens to be due with their first child in a couple days. Consequently, he has to hitch a ride with Ethan across the country to Los Angeles in time to witness the childbirth. Granted, every movie requires a certain suspension of disbelief, but this is really stretching the limits.

If you can get past the ridiculous setup of the first fifteen minutes, there are at least some good laughs ahead. Galifianakis first revealed his comic chops in the smash hit The Hangover, and while his character in this movie is not all that different, he gets more screen time and a greater opportunity to showcase his talents. Ethan is a rather pathetic chump heading to LA with actor inspirations. Not only is he socially awkward and not too bright, he also has some irritating personal habits. All of this generates some hilarious moments when juxtaposed with the highly stressed Peter. Downey Jr. has proven he can take on all manner of serious and comedic roles, and he is excellent here as a man fighting to maintain his sanity while stuck in the car for several days with a delusional idiot.
