Hey, Cop a Load of This!
It is said one of the best ways to enjoy the scenery are these magnificent canyons is by taking a railway line that goes through the mountains. The Copper Canyon Railway is also known as the Chihuahua Pacific Railway or ChePe and it is one of the reasons why Copper Canyon has had an influx of tourists over the many years it has been running. There are four villages that are located at various parts of the Copper Canyons. Creel which sits atop the canyon and is the highest point on the ChePe's railway route. This town is the second largest town in the municipality of Bocoyna. Creel is also the tourist central of the area so this is the place where you can find the best Mexico vacation rentals in the area. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Batopilas a town that can be found at the bottom of a canyon, by the Batopilas River. This is a town that was discovered by the Spanish in 17th century, where it was used as a centre to mine silver. The mines in the area produced a lot of silver at that time so much that it has been said that it has produced seven times more silver than the well known silver mine at Kongsberg located in Norway. But little mining is done nowadays, the fruit of the mining can be seen though as across from the town is a house that is a big as a castle that was built by the last governor of Washington DC. This is a good tourist attraction, which sees local families give tours to those who want a good look at it. The next town is located in the deepest part of the Canyon, the town is Urique and like Batopilas it is an old mining town. Urique is not exactly a tourist town but boasts some of the best hikes out of all the towns and is a perfect place for bird watchers, as you can see magpie jays, parrots, macaws, and trogon down here. It is also the place where you can find a lot of tropical vegetation and arroyos which when filled offer a great place to swim. Divisadero is a place where you can get the best views of canyons, this fact is recognised to the extent that the ChePe stops for 15-20mins so that people can marvel at the views and tourists can get great photos for their scrapbooks. It overlooks three canyons in the area Del Cobre, Urique, Tararecua but also Basaseachic Falls, which is one of the highest waterfalls in Mexico. Other than the views and the souvenirs and food from the RarĂ¡muri women there is not much else to do here.
