Put your hands up for Detroit
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is a world renowned that was founded almost 100 years ago and have only had 12 music directors over their illustrious years. Although not from Detroit just outside of the city probably the most famous pop star if not music icon came from the same state and that person was Madonna. She is doesn't need any introduction as most people in this world knows who she is. This multi platinum artist went to the University of Michigan and several of her hit records were written by her ex boyfriend Stephen Bray who came from Detroit. There are too many artists to mention that have platinum status in the music world that are related to this city in some way, ranging in various genres some have even surpassed 40 million copies by the year 2000. Ever since the 1940s the city has been nicknamed Motown, this is a short play on the words Motor and town. This was due to the cities extravagant music filled night life and also because it use to be one of the motor capitals of the world. Also the city was where Motown records was established which played a huge part in racial integration into popular music. Also it was the first Afrixcan American owned record label, which also was the reason why most of their acts were predominantly African American. There are various festivals that are held in Detroit that cater to the music fan for example there is the Detroit International Jazz Festival that is the largest free Jazz music Festival in America. It is held over Labor Day weekend every year. It is a Jazz festival that has been going on over 30 years strong and takes place in the down town region of Detroit. There are usually over 100 acts that perform over the course of the four days and there are also other things to keep people interested such as education activities for adults and children , late night jam sessions and of course a chance to meet the artists that perform. Over 750,000 Jazz fans turn up for this spectacle so it is definitely one to keep your eye out for if you are in the area around that time of the year. For those that aren't interested in Jazz then there is the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Which obviously is focused on Electronic dance music and is held over Memorial day weekend. You could say that this festival was inspired by the Detroit International Jazz Festival as Carol Marvin who was the founder of the festival, had sponsorship ties with the Jazz Festival. Also was one of the producers of the world fair. This is a festival that has been going on for a decade although there was a taster festival in 1994 but that didn't do well. Today the festival garners Electronic fans from all over the world, thanks to the many talented artists that have turned up to this Festival such recognised talents like Benny Benassi and Kevin Saunderson.
