It is quite common to find workstations in the modern offices. Mostly, these are the partitions radiating out from a central pivotal axis. Depending on the size of the space, there could be four or more workstation partitions coming out from the single central axis. These could be arranged in straight rows or even in the form of circles. This does not mean that there are no single workstations. Since, most of them have to keep the computers on the workstation furniture, the modern day offices shall keep in mind the following points in its designing:

1. Depth of the desk surface shall be adequate enough for the size of the monitor and for doing some written work in front of the monitor.

2. There shall be adequate space for seating and stretching out legs beneath the desk.

3. The keyboard shall be kept on the wooden or plastic tray which slides out (forward) and in (backward) smoothly. The locking system of the keyboard shall be working well.

4. Design and position of the mouse tray: To minimize the movement of the hand between the keyboard and the mouse, the workstation furniture shall have ample space for keeping the mouse as close as possible to the keyboard. Some of the design modifications also have them situated above the numeric keypad, if the latter is not frequently used. This assumes significance especially when the mouse is to be used for a long time.

5. The chair: A computer workstation shall have a very ergonomic design of the chair since the person might be required to sit and work in front of the computer for a long period of time. So, the chair shall be adjustable for its height, shall be accommodate the people of different height, shall be able to tilt at little angles to relieve pressure on different points of legs, shall be able to support the lower back and the arms of the chair shall be of adjustable height and shall be well padded for comfortable resting.

6. If you have to use a telephone frequently, then your workstation furniture shall have ample space for it. Further, it would be a better idea to use a headset if typing work has to be done simultaneously.

7. The cabinets and storages have to be designed in such a way that the present and future space requirements are duly met. So, having modular cabinets and storages would be a better idea.

8. Mobile or Fixed workstation furniture: Generally, the workstations are fixed. However, in some typical circumstances, these could be mobile as well having wheel beneath them facilitating easy movement.

So, the workstation furniture design shall take care of the minutest details. If proper care is not taken in its designing then there are greater chances of the money getting waste or the furniture posing difficulties while using it. A modern day office workstation does take all this into account. Even the retailers get the standard furniture designed in a way that is convenient to use by everybody.
