Las Vegas, NV – You may only have two joints in your head, but they’re complicated ones, points out Dr. David Alpan, a Las Vegas braces provider. The temporomandibular joints (one on each side of the jaw) include the jaw bone – and the muscles and ligaments around it. The joints work together to create some complex movements, a combination of rotating and gliding that allows you to open and close your mouth – as well as chew and speak. Any problem that prevents these joints from working properly can cause a TMJ disorder (TMD).

“Many experts estimate that the majority of Americans suffer somewhat from TMD,” explains Dr. Alpan, a Las Vegas Invisalign provider. “But only a small percentage of patients receive the necessary help. If you have some or all of the symptoms, look for a dentist with the necessary expertise to offer you a range of treatments.”

Symptoms: Symptoms of a TMJ disorder include:

  • Face pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Soreness in neck or shoulders
  • Headaches
  • Limited jaw movement
  • Broken or worn teeth
  • Tooth pain
  • Locking of the jaw
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms
  • A clicking or popping sound in the jaw
TMD can be caused by arthritis or injury, but it’s most often a result of a malocclusion (a bad bite) caused by the way the upper and lower teeth fit together. TMD can be caused by “bruxism,” or teeth grinding. “Whatever the reason,” says Dr. Alpan, a Las Vegas orthodontist provider, “TMD results when the muscles of the face are forced into a strained position, leading to pain in the face, jaw, neck, and elsewhere.”

Diagnosis: When you visit the dentist, he or she will conduct a thorough examination of your joints and muscles to check for pain, clicking, or difficulty moving. Your dentist may take x-rays or make an impression of your teeth to create a mold that shows how your teeth fit together and how your jaw is working. Your dentist will also want to know other details of your medical history that may be relevant.

“Unfortunately problems with the TM joints are often misdiagnosed or dismissed,” relates Dr. Alpan, a Las Vegas orthodontics practiotioner. “And not every dentist is well-versed in the symptoms or treatments for this issue. It’s important to find the right specialist to handle your problem.”

Treatment: There are a variety of treatments for TMD depending on the symptoms and the cause of the problem. Options include:

  • A mouth guard or appliance
  • Braces or other orthodontic treatments
  • Crowns or other dental work to change your bite
  • Medication
  • Relaxation exercises or biofeedback
  • TENS treatment to help the muscles relax
  • Surgery as a last resort
“Your dentist should start with the most conservative and least invasive options,” says Dr. Alpan, a Las Vegas NV invisible braces provider. “Many people can have their TMD corrected rather easily and with minor trouble. Others may have to pursue more aggressive options.”
