However, they have also worked out some fundamental boundaries. “We’ve never worked in the same room – that’s very important,” says Annoushka.

“And we have a rule that we links of london Chain only do things we both agree on,” says John. They are convinced of the merit of being married to your business partner. “It’s a hugely strong thing in business to have two people who tell each other the truth.

“It allows you to make decisions fast and, at its best, it can be incredibly powerful,” Annoushka says.

MAKING IT WORK

Decide how decisions will be made — will one of you be the “ultimate” boss or will all resolutions be made jointly?
Agree on when “talking shop” is permitted outside the office.
Nominate a senior third party with managerial responsibilities — it means that you can then take holidays as a couple

TGetting through it has strengthened them. “We just had to throw everything at it and not waste what we had built so far,” says Alice. “And thank God we did. It shows what hard work can do.”

But they also decided to make some changes and bought a house in Somerset, where they now spend half their time, instead of living “above the shop”.

Another successful business partnership is that forged by John and Annoushka Ayton. They co-founded the jewellery company Links of London in 1990, selling it in 2006 for £50 million.

“We can’t work separately now, <a href="http://elinksoflondon-uk.com/category/links-of-london-ch ... of london Chain ” says Annoushka. “When we sold Links, we sort of thought, 'Oh well, that’s it.’ But John would say to me that so-and-so had approached him about getting involved in other things and I found that incredibly irritating. I thought – if he’s doing something and I’m not involved at all, I really won’t like it. So when we decided to start Annoushka [a high-end jewellery line] it was partly because it’s what we both love to do and know we can do, but also because we love working together.”

They live with their four ” says Annoushka.
