Last week there was some difficulty in the publication of the first article in the series. The article should be re-published shortly and we apologize for the inconvience. In the meantime, we are going to move forward with the second article in the series.

In article number one, we defined DME, discussed the complexity of the documentation and billing insurance companies for reimbursement. This week we will discuss what a supplier should look for when trying to choose the right DME company.

When choosing a billing vendor, the first step is to review the reputation of the company. A supplier should always ask for references close to the size and volume of his or her store. During the reference review process, be sure to discuss the entire claims process with the customers. There is no better way to get to know the business practices of a company than to talk with its customers. The customers will tell the good, the bad, and the ugly about customer service, reimbursement rates, and yes – the dreaded denial rate.

The second step is to examine the company's web site. Any forward – thinking progressive company has a professional web site. When visiting a company's web site:
1-Compare the company representative's sales pitch to what is actually being promoted on the web site. If the sales pitch doesn't mirror the web site, then the integrity of the company should be called into question.
2-The web site should be easy to navigate and should be able to provide you not only with information about the company, but with useful links that will aide a client in understanding the ever-changing world of Medicare and DME claims filing.
3-The web site should list the services that the company offers. A potential customer should be able to find everything he or she needs about company services or products online. If visitors are asked to contact the company for service offerings, then sales is a large focus of the vendor, and not claims submissions.

The third step is to make sure that claim denial management for all insurance companies is not a separate service, but included in the cost of the basic service. It is important to ensure that the company is performing a clean claim review to increase your chances of receiving reimbursement on time and reducing the number of denied claims.

The final, and perhaps the most important factor to consider when choosing the right DME billing company, is to make sure the company specializes in durable medical equipment billing.
A DME supplier will increase DME reimbursement, improve the bottom line and supply DME with confidence to patients when choosing a DME specialist.

Next week, we will review customer service driven companies and compare them with services that rely on digital and electronic forms of communication to interact with their customers. Future weeks will include:

1-Beware of Real-Time Processing
2-Third Party Claims Switching Companies
3-Continuing Education and Training Classes
