All of us have had a mentor at some point of our lives. Whether it was that professor at college or the first boss who taught a lot of things about the corporate world, all of us have fond memories of the time spent with our mentors. Yachting is no different. You can have a yacht mentor who would help you sharpen your yachting skills and enjoy boating even more.
Irrespective of whether you are new to yachting or an experienced boater, you can always look for a mentor. A mentor will help you by polishing your yachting skills and, in the process, increasing your confidence in your cruising abilities. The scope of a mentor extends very wide. Your yachting mentor can teach you basic yachting handling if you are just venturing out into the waters and high end navigation skills, if you are experienced boater.

Research indicates that more than 65% of yachters have yachting mentor, someone whom they turn to when they have any questions. No wonder, considering that the concept of yachting is quite vast and there is always so much to learn, no matter how long you’ve been yachting, there’s always someone who knows something that you don’t. For many, it is more about knowledge sharing than pure mentoring. Two people who love yachting come together and exchange ideas of superior yachting techniques, each gaining and disseminating knowledge in the process.

Ideally, when seeking a mentor you could look for someone who has spent a lot of time on water. Your mentor could be a captain, crew member or even a fellow boat owner. There are various professionals who have made yacht mentoring their career. You could reach out to them when you are ready to be mentored. But, mentoring is as much about bonding as it is about sharing knowledge, so, it would not be a bad idea to seek out a mentor in your family.

A mentor will help you enjoy your time out in the sea to the fullest and once you garner years of experience and knowledge, you could mentor someone and keep the bond alive.
