Many of us would probably admit that it is much more enjoyable to watch others in an airport, struggling through security, paying ungodly rates for parking, and dealing with flight delays, than being there in person. There are a variety of movies that are filmed in whole or in part using airports and their surroundings. Some of these films are funny, some are dramatic, but all capture certain aspects of an airport that many of us can identify with. Here are a few you might recognize or want to check out if you don’t.

Catch Me If You Can
Based on a true story, “Catch Me If You Can”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, follows a con man (DiCaprio), posing as a Pam Am pilot and the FBI agent (Hanks) who pursues him. While the movie takes place in many locations other than just airports, according to Movie-locations.com the movie includes scenes shot at JKF Airport and Ontario Airport, which contrary to what its name might lead you to believe, is actually located outside of Los Angeles.

Airport
If you’re looking for a cliffhanger of a film that centers itself around an airport and airport activities, look no further. With plenty of teeth-gritting action, “Airport” is an essential part of airport movie history, and has spawned a variety of similar action-in-the-air type films.

Airplane!
A dramatic plot, paired with a great lineup of actors and some lines that may live on for centuries in the archives of movie comedy history, gives us “Airplane!”. Can we ever forget the scene when main character Ted Striker says, “Surely there must be something you can do,” only to have Dr. Rumack reply, “I’m doing everything I can… and stop calling me Shirley.” While the majority of this movie’s scenes take place inside the plane, there are certainly some humorous shots that are filmed at the LAX airport in Los Angeles.

The Terminal
Ah yes, it probably sounds like a nightmare to most, being stranded in an airport for so long that we end up residing there. For immigrant Viktor Navorski, played by Tom Hanks, this nightmare becomes all too real when he is detained at JFK Airport. At least he has love interest Amelia Warren, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones to keep him occupied during his stay.

Die Hard 2
If you are looking for action when it comes to movies filmed at airports, Die Hard 2 is a nail-bitter that might just do the trick. Tension runs high as John McClain (Bruce Willis) must defeat terrorists at Dulles International Airport outside Washington, DC in order to allow his wife’s plane, circling above, to land before it runs out of fuel.
