LightScribe is a direct disc labeling technology that burns text and graphics onto the surface of a CD or DVD using the disc drive's laser and a specially coated LightScribe disc.

Lightscribe

LightScribe discs have a unique code which allows the drive to determine the dimensions of the disc and accurately apply the image.

Three elements of the LightScribe system work together to make precise, high-quality labels: Hardware* — LightScribe-enabled optical disc driveSoftware* — LightScribe-supported software applicationsMedia* — LightScribe-specific discs with a thin dye coating *Note: The LightScribe-enabled DVD drive and software come pre-installed on certain HP PCs, while LightScribe media is sold separately.

Technology

To take advantage of LightScribe technology, you'll need a LightScribe-enabled disc drive, LightScribe-enabled discs, and supporting software.

Drives

The first LightScribe drives and media are expected to hit the market about six months from now, from leading manufacturers such as Hitachi-LG, MicroVision, Mitsubishi Chemical, Moser Baer India, Sonic Solutions, and Toshiba. The thing is that, even with LightScribe drives and media readily available around the lab, I’ve never bothered to create even one of these labels, except for when I’m testing the drives.

Data

The reason behind this technology is offer better quality labels that can’t come unglued or have ink that may penetrate media and damage the data on them. Using the same laser that burns data in their disc drives, customers burn their data as always, flip the disc over, reinsert it into the drive and burn a precise and permanent iridescent label.

Color

They cost exactly the same as other LightScribe Media (do a price check here), and come in more colors, so you can categorize your media by color, or just have discs that are nicer to look at. If you dig LightScribe media, and are willing to put in the extra time to make these labels, then the Verbatim Color LightScribe DVD+Rs are great.
