Search Engine Optimization is a process by which a website is improved so that it can be more easily found by search engines, rank higher on search engine results and be found by its target audience.

The main components to SEO are: keyword analysis, content analysis, title and meta tags, relevant link building, search engine submission, and maintenance.

KEYWORDS
Keywords are the words that your customers type into a search engine like Google or Yahoo to find the product or service they are looking for. In order for search engines to match your website to a customer’s online search, these “key words” need to be used throughout your website. If they’re not … the search engines won’t find your web site and your customers won’t be able to find you.

CONTENT ANALYSIS
This is where you re-evaluate the content on each page of your web site to make sure you have the right keywords and key phrases and enough of them to be found by the search engines.

TITLE AND META TAGS
Every page of your web site has a heading (called the title tag) and a subheading (called the meta tag). These are very important because they are read by the search engine crawlers and the information in them is also what people see when they are looking through internet search results. You’ll want to make sure that your relevant keywords are here as well.

BACK LINKS
When another web site has a link directing it’s readers to your site, it builds credibility for your web site and more importantly raises the relevancy of your site in the eyes of the search engines. It is very important to make sure that you only have sites that relate to your product or service linking to your site. You want to avoid link farms and other schemes designed to “cheat” the system and fool the search engines. Google and others use complex algorithms that can spot this and they will remove your site from their index – making you invisible to their viewers.

SEARCH ENGINE SUBMISSION
After the pages of the web site have been optimized then you submit you’re new and improved site to the search engines. There are many search engines out there, but over major ones, Google, Yahoo and MSN, are used by 90% of internet users. This submission allows the search engines to evaluate the improved site and re-rank it. The search engines have varying schedules for doing this. Google is the fastest in evaluates sites the most often. The others index every few weeks or monthly.

MONITORING & MAINTENANCE
This last phase of SEO is ongoing. You have to remember that once your web site is optimized and you’ve achieved higher rankings -- you still aren’t done. The internet isn’t static and your competitors are constantly updating and improving their web sites as well. The ranking you have today can change over a period of time, so it’s important to monitor your site’s ranking and make adjustments to keep your web site bringing in the traffic it should.
