Because when people say 'marriage', we are often think of corny and cheesy clichés... I wanted to write a piece on that highly symbolic part of a wedding... the wedding cake figures...

Indispensible? Improbable? Inconceivable? Everyone has their own opinion... Personally I think that you rarely find a truely beautiful pair of figurines, always overly stereotypical or too obvious, they hardly ever resemble the bride and groom... If the goal is to say "Yes! This is indeed a wedding cake you are looking at!" Then you would have thought that the four tiered white cake in the middle of a wedding reception was clear enough... so why do we bother?

Hmmm... I dont know, perhaps it goes back to ancient times, when a statue was present throughout the meal to sybolise fertility perhaps??? That would make sense, marriage, wedding night, fertility, babies... just like the old days!

But today its baby before, during or after marriage, and a purely symbolic wedding night... so what happened to our lovely statue promising fertility and vigour to the happy couple...? Well... two little bits of porcelain at best, more usually plastic made in China, that say to everyone... "Yes! After two hours of wedding ceremonies your are definately at a wedding... and yes this IS the wedding cake!"

Right, back on track, after having shot these poor two little figurines down in flames, it begs the question of how we choose the two figures we invite for dessert, who, after all, are to represent us on D-Day.

Is it as much of a ceremony as choosing the engagement ring or the wedding ring? Or is it just one of those smaller tasks allocated to Mother in Law??

And where to start... A good resemblance? Relevant? Personal characteristics? Humorous? Stylish?

Here's my selection of figurines...
