How to become a good leaderLeadership: fundamental to everyone in all walks of life, but not the easiest thing to get to grips with. Performed with modesty and integrity, good leadership can transform and enhance a team of people, but where do we find these great leaders who can be few and far between? | | |
Firstly let’s eradicate the myth that good leaders cannot be trained. Some people may be born with an innate sense of leadership, but that doesn’t mean to say that the more timid of us can’t also become eloquent and uplifting leaders in business. Indeed in the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Coming from one of today’s most inspirational and heart-warming leaders, it seems this is a good place to start. So here’s my guide to honing your leadership qualities and proving to all those around you that you can become that great leader you aspire to be.
• Have a vision. You need a picture of the future so that your team accepts your ideas and know exactly where they’re going with them.
• Believe. If you don’t believe in, or are passionate about your vision, then it’s not going to work. You need to inspire your team to get them on board.
• Tactics. Never take your eye off the bottom line. A good leader is strongly dedicated to results.
• Have the likeability factor. Your team and customers are the lifeblood of your business. Without their support, you will fail as a leader. High levels of emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills are a must.
• Decisiveness. "In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing," Theodore Roosevelt –sometimes you have to be prepared to make that crucial decision without all the necessary information.
• Open to feedback. There is always room for improvement and great leaders will need to hear feedback from others to constantly evolve.
• Willing to train. Consider going back to study. One university in particular, Hult International Business School, has been churning out global business leaders since 1964, offering Masters, a top-ranked MBA program and Undergraduate degrees in business.
• Be self-confident. To build a strong and highly effective team, you have to have that confidence embedded deep within you to exhilarate and motivate your team.
