The Evolution of Illumination 1986 – 2009
From the mid-eighties and more than likely previous to that, lighting within a domestic dwelling would have consisted of one pendant in each habitual room, One Baton holder in the Bathroom and a fluorescent strip light in the Kitchen. This would have been adequate in a standard three bed semi detached house. A larger, more affluent building would have taken on something a bit more exciting. Like R80 eyeball down lights. The next phase in lighting a standard house seems to be Low voltage down lights. These were amazing when they came out as they bought a clean, crisp modern touch to what was a dated room. The problem with these Low voltage down lights are people went down light crazy and filled an entire room with the things. At 50 watts each, not exactly cheap to run. The addition of using Mains voltage down lights didn’t really help matters. Still 50 watts, still rooms filled with the things. Now however things are changing rapidly within the lighting sector. More choice, better quality and better education towards what you can do with lighting. The only additional cost would be hiring a lighting consultant or lighting designer. The cost of using a lighting consultant compared to having your house look dated with the wrong kind of lights in the wrong places is completely relative. Don’t get me wrong Down lights can still be amazing (I use them in my projects). But there is more to lighting than meets the eye. We at Oxford Lighting Design know a thing or two about lighting houses, whether they are a one bed flat, a three bed semi or a sixty room hotel.
