5 Ways to Save on Food
Follow these five tips to eat the foods you want and save money at the same time. 1. Buy on sale and in bulk. If an item you buy often is on sale, this is the time to stock pile it. Take advantage of buy one, get one free sales or reduced prices on your favorite food items. Most items you buy are canned or packaged. Many items can be frozen or have a naturally long shelf-life, so its easy to buy multiple items and store them for later use. Make sure that you’ll use the items before the expiration dates to avoid wasting money by having to throw away food that you don’t get to use in time. 2. Use it all or turn leftovers into a whole new meal. When you buy food, make sure that you eat everything before it goes bad. This may require you to plan your meals accordingly–using the fresh ingredients first before it spoils. You can also turn leftovers into whole new meals if you put on your creative thinking cap. For example, let’s say you grill some steaks and you have leftover meat. No problem. Cut up the leftover steak into bite-sized pieces, saute some chopped green pepper and onion in a frying pan, add the meat and a couple cans or jars of beef gravy until it is heated. Pour the concoction over cooked egg noodles and voila, you have a whole new meal. 3. Stay away from prepared foods. The grocery store sells ingredients for you to make your own meals but it also offers a variety of prepared or prepackaged foods for your convenience. Since all you have to do is heat these prepackaged items up or they are ready to eat out of the package, you pay premium prices. You can save money by buying the ingredients and preparing your own foods. 4. Save on eating out. While eating out should not be a daily event, it is something that you can do from time to time. You can still save money and eat at your favorite places. Websites such as Restaurant.com and OpenTable.com allow you to print certificates for buy one meal, get one free deals or save up to 50% on your total meal purchase. 5. Use sales to plan your meals. Buy foods that are on sale and then plan your food menu around what you buy instead of the other way around. Take a few minutes to read your local grocery store sale paper and create your menu and shopping list based on it. This means you’ll save money by only buying what’s on sale or only paying full price for extra items rather than your whole list. Since you don’t want to spend all of your money on food and you can’t give up eating, simply use these five ways to save on food from the grocery store or at your favorite local eating spot instead. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the food you love without blowing your hard earned money all on the food you love.
